Why Utah?

Idaho has trainers. The fit still matters.

Idaho has a strong hunting-dog community, and there are good trainers throughout the state.

We don’t expect every Idaho owner to drive past a closer trainer simply because our kennel is in Utah.

But training style, communication, experience, program structure, and the kind of dog being trained all matter.

We’ve had Idaho clients decide Utah Bird Dog Training was the right fit for their dog even when other options were closer.

Our programs are designed around consistent daily work, real field training, live birds when appropriate, and enough time to build meaningful progress rather than rushing a dog through a short stay.

For some owners, that fit is worth the drive.

Built for hunting dogs

Dogs that need to work in real bird country.

Idaho offers a wide range of hunting environments, from upland country to wetlands and waterfowl habitat.

That variety places different demands on a dog.

Retrievers may need to be steady, mark birds well, handle at distance, work through cover, and stay reliable around decoys and other dogs.

Pointing dogs need bird sense, search, range, obedience, steadiness, and enough real bird exposure to learn how to handle changing cover and conditions.

Our goal isn’t simply to produce a dog that looks polished during a training session.

The goal is to build a hunting dog that can go home and be useful where its owner actually hunts.

Retriever training

For duck dogs that need more than basic obedience.

Many Idaho clients come to us with retrievers that need to move beyond basic commands and become more capable hunting dogs.

Depending on the dog’s level and goals, retriever training may include:

Every dog progresses differently, and advanced retriever work requires time.

That’s one reason multi-month training stays work well for out-of-state clients. Instead of making repeated trips for individual lessons, the dog stays with us and progresses through the program as he’s ready.

Pointing dog training

Bird exposure, field work, and control.

A pointing dog learns by spending time in the field and around birds.

Our pointing-dog programs are built around developing natural ability while also creating the obedience and control needed for a useful hunting dog.

Depending on the dog and training level, work may include:

The exact progression depends on the individual dog.

Obedience training

Your dog doesn’t have to hunt.

Utah Bird Dog Training is known for hunting dogs, but we also offer a two-month obedience-only board-and-train program for companion dogs.

We’ve had out-of-state owners choose our obedience program because they want more than a weekly lesson and prefer having the dog stay for a full block of consistent daily training.

Depending on the dog, training may include:

Because the program is eight weeks long, we have time to build repetition into everyday routines rather than simply teaching commands during short appointments.

The drive

For some Idaho clients, we’re surprisingly close.

Idaho is a long state, so there isn’t one meaningful drive time to our facility.

For owners in southern and southeastern Idaho, Payson can be only a few hours away. For clients farther north or west, it becomes a more substantial trip.

That’s why our program structure matters.

Most hunting dogs aren’t coming for one afternoon of training. They’re staying for multiple months.

You make one trip to drop the dog off, the dog trains with us, and you return when the program is finished.

The same travel logic applies to obedience clients. Our obedience-only program is two months long, so Idaho owners aren’t driving to Utah for weekly lessons. They make one trip for drop-off and one trip home after the program is complete.

Standard drop-off and pickup are Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.

If a weekday is impossible, weekend drop-off is $100 and weekend pickup is $200.

The stay

$1,250 a month, boarding included

Training is $1,250 per month and boarding during the stay is included.

Our obedience-only program is two months long. Hunting-dog program length varies depending on the dog’s experience and goals.

Food is additional at $75 per month for Purina Pro Plan Sport, or owners may provide their own food.

Live-bird costs vary depending on the training program and are billed separately when needed.

A $100 deposit is applied toward the first month of training.

We send a photo and short training update approximately every other week.

At pickup, plan to spend an hour or two working with us and your dog. We’ll explain the commands and handling system, work the dog with you, and make sure you understand how to maintain the training when you get home.

Winter training

Hunting season shows you what needs work.

A full hunting season has a way of exposing weaknesses that aren’t obvious during backyard training.

Maybe your retriever breaks, struggles with blind retrieves, ignores the whistle, or needs better steadiness.

Maybe your pointing dog bumps birds, ranges without enough control, needs more bird exposure, or isn’t reliable enough around gunfire and distractions.

Winter can be an excellent time to address those problems.

Instead of giving up part of next hunting season, the dog can spend December, January, or February getting consistent professional work while you still have spring and summer ahead to maintain the training.

For Idaho hunters, that can be a particularly practical offseason use of time.

Winter availability isn’t limited to hunting dogs. Our two-month obedience-only program can also be a good fit for families who want to use the quieter winter months to send a dog for a substantial block of training.

Utah Bird Dog Training

Experience matters more than a state line.

Utah Bird Dog Training has been training hunting dogs for nearly two decades.

We’ve worked with retrievers, pointing breeds, family hunting dogs, and dogs at very different stages of development.

Some Idaho owners have trainers much closer to home and still decide to send their dog to us because our training approach and program structure are the fit they’re looking for.

We’re not trying to be the closest trainer to every Idaho hunter.

We’re trying to be the right trainer for the dog and owner who fit our program.

We’ve trained dogs from across Idaho.

We’ve had Idaho owners bring dogs to Utah for retriever training, pointing-dog work, and other hunting-dog programs.

Questions

Idaho Bird Dog Training FAQs

Do you train hunting dogs from Idaho?

Yes. We’ve had Idaho clients bring retrievers, pointing dogs, and other hunting dogs to our Payson, Utah facility for professional training.

How far is Utah Bird Dog Training from Idaho?

It depends heavily on where you live. For some southern Idaho owners, the drive can be only a few hours. Other areas of Idaho require a much longer trip. Because most hunting-dog programs involve an extended stay, clients generally make one trip for drop-off and one trip for pickup.

Why choose a Utah trainer when Idaho has bird dog trainers?

Idaho has a strong hunting-dog community and several training options. Some owners still choose UTBDT because they prefer our training philosophy, program structure, experience, communication, or the specific type of training their dog needs.

How long will my hunting dog stay?

Training length depends on the dog’s age, experience, temperament, and goals. Complete hunting-dog programs may require two, three, four months or longer.

Is boarding included?

Yes. Boarding is included in the $1,250 monthly training tuition. Food and live birds, when needed, are additional.

Do I need to visit during training?

No. We provide periodic updates during the stay. At pickup, we’ll work with you and your dog so you understand the commands and handling system before heading home.

Do you offer obedience training for Idaho dogs that don’t hunt?

Yes. Our two-month obedience-only board-and-train program is available for companion dogs as well as hunting dogs.

How long is the obedience program?

The obedience-only program is eight weeks, or approximately two months. Hunting-dog programs vary depending on the dog and training goals.

What does the obedience program work on?

Training may include heel, sit, down, place, recall, leash manners, off-leash reliability, impulse control, household manners, distraction work, and e-collar conditioning when appropriate. More detail is on Obedience Training.
